Root Beer Crock Pot Pulled Pork

The end result is something you can either just simply serve on a hamburger bun as a sandwich or you can serve it with tortillas for tacos.  You decide.  This one of those recipes that whenever have taken it to a pot luck, party or just served it at home has drawn raves from people.  Best part is you can set it up in the morning and just leave it go all day.

This recipe is a good alternative for those that don’t have a smoker to make barbeque pork in perhaps because they can’t have one due to their living arrangements.

Ingredients
In the crock pot
  • 1 8 - 10 lb Boston Butt pork shoulder
  • 2 Onions quartered and pulled apart
  • 2 Tbsp of Chile Powder
  • 1 Tbsp of granulated garlic or 4 cloves freshly chopped
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • ½ Tbsp black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 liter bottle of Root Beer or Coca Cola
Add after cooked
  • Salty Dog's Sweet Barbecue sauce or other sweet barbecue sauce. (mines better!)
  • 1 Tbsp Oregano
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
Crock Pot
  1. Put all the first group of ingredients into a crock pot
  2. Cook on high for 8 hours
  3. No peeking
Pullng
  1. Put the pork into a work pan leaving the braising liquid behind (I use one of my hotel steam trays for this)
  2. Remove bones and any onion that did not dissolve
  3. With two forks pull the meat apart into shreds
  4. At this point check the seasoning and add salt/pepper to taste if needed.
  5. Add the oregano and cilantro and mix well
  6. add small amounts of barbecue sauce until well sauced but not too wet. Should enahance the flavor not drown it.
  7. Serve with the barbeque sauce in case someone wants it
